Today's technology driven society is distracted, and too distracted in my opinion. I saw it in the video, I see it in my peers, and I see it in myself. My own concentration and ability to focus on one task has diminished with each passing year in college. I try to focus, but it just doesn't happen. I often wonder what type of work I could produce if I was not so distracted by technology, or perhaps how much more time I would have to do the things I love.
One comment in the second video that stuck with me was that "teachers have to be entertainers in order to capture the attention of their students." I think that is so reflective of what teachers have been morphed into these days. Likewise, as new teachers that statement also prepares us for what we are getting into. It is pretty hard to gain the attention of an individual who is distracted, never mind get their attention long enough to teach them something worthwhile.
The cyber bullying aspect was really eye-opening as well. It is scary to think of the world children and teenagers are growing up in, and furthermore the world that seems so uncontrollable.
I appreciated the educational and "manners first" approach in Korea. I think that is something that this country should look into. However, the video said something about that it would be hard for the United States to do that. Anybody have an idea why that would be? I can not think of anything specific.
I agree that the quote about teachers being entertainers sticks with you. That teacher said something along the lines of "standing in front of the room with a monotone voice and a piece of chalk isn't going to work anymore". When I think back to my middle school and high school experiences that is exactly what I conjure up in my mind. Since I want to be a math teacher I think this will be especially challenging. But hopefully this class will give all of us some ideas on how to entertain as well as educate.
